Description

El Tequileño is crafted using natural volcanic spring water and the ripest agave from the Highlands. The resulting sweet nectar is fermented with yeast influenced by our 150-year-old mango trees and distilled in copper pot stills to produce an exceptionally smooth and full-bodied Tequila. Named in honour of the people of Tequila, El Tequileño was founded in 1959 by Jorge Salles Cuervo to produce the finest quality tequila - every drop, a celebration of passion and heritage.

Third-generation master distiller, Antonio Salles, still uses the same processes his grandfather devised to produce the brand's tequilas. The range is certified additive-free and all six expressions are made using sustainable techniques, with 98 per cent of residuals from the production process recycled and turned into fertiliser for new agave plants.

El Tequileño is the favoured tequila brand at La Capilla Cantina in Tequila, founded by the late Don Javier Delgado Corona and a regular fixture in the World's Top 50 Bars list.

Grover Sanschagrin: 'Fruit, dried fruit, vanilla, raisin, oak aromas. Oak, barrel spice, and vanilla flavour. Finish is spicy, with leather, and has a black pepper ending.'

Remy Newland: 'Nose: Subtle, somewhat timid aromas abound. Spice and round fruit notes to begin. Warm allspice, cinnamon and clove spice blend. Citrus, dark cherries and ripe peaches. A leather and vanilla aroma. A light pepper that has a sweet nuance. A hint of butterscotch. Flavours: The flavours are more robust than the nose. Fruit, dried fruit, spice and nuts: hazelnuts and walnuts. Orange peel and salty toffee. It has building pepper and cinnamon heat that carries a punch but backs off pretty quickly. Perfect amount of oak presence for my tastes. This has great balance and is my favourite expression of the new Round Bottle releases.'

Ryan August: 'On the nose, Vanilla, oak and sweet cooked agave. Citrus and caramel, candied orange peel, baking spices and cinnamon. This has a lot going on. Dried fruit, maybe even a little banana. On the palate, creamy, cooked agave and vanilla. I taste the oak, caramel, butterscotch. It’s very rich and the depth of flavour is very intense. Top 5 añejo for me. I tried this right alongside the reposado and the intensity of flavour is noticeable. Amazing tequila, great añejo, I’m willing to pay the price for this.'

Jon Novak: 'Beautiful nose. Barrel notes galore. Fruit? Beautiful tears on the glass. Wow. This is a beautiful Añejo from start to finish. Even better than the repo. I’m impressed.'

Interesting fact: El Tequileño is one of only 8 brands of tequila that is exclusively made at its distillery. Recently, the distillery was rated the #10 top distillery by Taste Tequila.

Region: the agaves are grown in the highlands, and the distillery is in the lowlands

    Age of agave when harvested:

Water Source: natural volcanic spring, only 1 of 4 tequilas have access to this water source which makes for a very smooth tequila

Oven type: autoclave (high pressure), extra attention is taken to remove the cogollo of the agave before cooking, this is the bitter part of the plant which can negatively impact the final profile of the tequila.

    Extraction method: roller mill

Fermentation: stainless steel tanks, 100% agave, fermentation without fibres

    Still type: copper pot

    Ageing: American white oak barrels
