Description

G4 Tequila Reposado is a clean-edged reposado tequila rested in wood for a layered citrus-fruit and vanilla profile integrated beautifully with the juicy agave character at the spirit’s heart. This particular expression spends at least 6 months maturing in American oak bourbon barrels before being bottled. G4 Reposado builds on the character of the blanco, but adds to the aroma hints of peach and liquorice, with small hints of grapefruit and lighter pepper in the tasting.

Felipe Camarena maestro tequilero at distillery El Pandillo, comes from a family of distillers. His brother Carlos produces Ocho and his grandfather founded Tapatio. Felipe's dedication to the craft is second to none, he is highly inventive having built his own equipment to his exacting standards, 'Igor' the shredder, 'Felipenstien' the crusher and his two-storey oven which steams his agaves evenly. He is dedicated to being as earth-friendly as possible, harvesting rainwater, planting for biodiversity and neutralizing his tequila vinazas before using it as fertilizer.

Felipe has three sources of water: spring, rainwater and deep well water. The water source for his tequilas is important, he demonstrates through his brands the unique flavour profiles that each water—and its minerals - gives to tequila.

The Jalisco region is famous for its rainy season, and the roof at El Pandillo distillery is a giant rainwater collection system – leading underground to a 53,000-gallon cistern. This allows them to use the rainwater all year round, even during the dry season. Rainwater subtly provides the tequila with that wonderful smell in the air just before it starts to rain- petrichor.

The spring water and deep well water both have unique characteristics as well. El Pandillo is at a high point in Los Altos, so the water is not affected by agricultural runoff. The spring water has more minerals in the water compared to the rain; it’s well-balanced and naturally alkaline. The deep well at El Pandillo is over 450 feet deep and is earthy, and highly mineralized.

The G4 brand is produced using fifty per cent captured rainwater and fifty per cent spring water, unique in tequila production, creating a tequila that is clean and crisp with a touch of minerality.

His 5 big brands are: G4 (50/50 deep-well/spring water), Pasote (40/60 rain/spring water), ArteNOM (50/50 deep-well/spring water), Terralta (deep-well water), Volans (rain/spring/deep-well water)

    Tequila MatchMaker Rating: 88

Remy Newland: 'Nose: Spicy cooked agave. Crisp distinct nose. Fruitiness and rounded, balanced aromas. Flavour: Nuttiness with baking spices on top of the honey-sweet baked agave. Soft heat and oily. Rounded appealing flavour profile. Longish balanced finish.'

Matt Gresham: 'In the glass, very light yellow tinted and with nice long tears much like the blanco. In the nose, there’s loads of agave, some minerals, rain, oak, vanilla, citrus (grapefruit maybe?) On the palate, this picks right up where the blanco left off but somehow accentuates the good parts even further - cooked agave, pepper, butter, citrus, and oak. It’s got a long beautiful finish with notes of vanilla and a sweet burn at the very end. Definitely one of my favourites!'

Cool Chile Rating: offering great quality and value for a house pour, Don Felipe's dedication to his craft is inspiring! We like the G4 Reposado for its delicate maturation in wood allowing all the delicious flavours found in the blanco but with muted pepper and softly rounded spice. Value: £2.75 per 50ml. We also think this would make a great gift, affordable but of amazing quality.
